Pray and Be Peaceful

Martin Luther King Jr received by Jimbeau Walsh

I come in the love of God and His peace on this day. I am your brother and friend, in Christ, Martin Luther King Jr.

I have spoken through this brother before about my journey, my admiration for the non-violence of Jesus and Gandhi, my walk, and my persistence. I mentioned to my brother to ‘keep his eye on the prize’, using that phrase as a metaphor for staying focused on the love of God. In these trying times, not only in my own country but around the world, there is so much anger, so much fear. It may feel at times as if the world could explode in violence, and in some places, this is indeed the case. But I wish you to remember and to encourage others to refrain (from violence). For those whose frustrations bring them to a barrel of a gun, they often wish to taunt you and seduce you into an equal reaction, but this is a snare, and it is not worthy of your participation.

On earth, I said ‘the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice’, wishing to inspire my followers, and I was paraphrasing a very similar quote from the abolitionist, Theodore Parker. At the same time, I was quite mindful, as I have said before, of Gandhi’s work, his deep commitment to prayer and non-violence, his reminding us that tyrants always fail in the end, and of course the Master saying, resist not evil and if one should strike you on the cheek, turn the other, and pray for those who would harm you or hate you.

It is so important to be an outward sign of peace, of the grace of God that you have in your souls, to be firm in your prayer, to be calm in the turbulent waters. When one looks out at those who seek power, and you see the nefariousness of their deeds, you must pray for them, you must love your enemies, and believe me, I know how hard it is to be up against a wall of hate and the power of those who would keep you down. So, we walked in peace, and though some may believe we failed, as my life was taken as well as the lives of others, and yet we did create change, and many ( unjust) things that were taking place in those days are no longer the case. Social justice has prevailed on many levels. There is a greater sense of equality, and I speak not only for African Americans or even all people of color but for all who feel oppressed. We were joined by many, and I will say the Jewish community in particular truly understood our plight.

All people must stand for equality and justice, and you do live in the world, but as I said through my brother before, first and foremost, pray for this love of God to be in your soul, that you may be peace, that you may be love, that your light may outshine the darkness. As your souls are transformed, you help transform this world.

Again, I thank my brother for allowing me to come on this day, where you celebrate the gains that we have made, but also stay focused on what needs to be done. Do it in the love of God. This is my request and of all here, including my namesake, Martin Luther, who is here with us tonight, as well as brother Gandhi and so many others. Peace be upon you, and may the love of God be with you each. God bless you.

I am Martin Luther King Jr.
