An Enemy Becomes a Friend by God’s Love

Francis of Assisi received by Jimbeau Walsh

I am here, your brother in Christ, Francis.

Dear brothers and sisters, it is my honor to join you in your prayer, and it is my wish to shed some light on the situation in your world, which, as strange as it may seem, is not so different than the situation that was in my time. I lived during the Crusades, the fourth and fifth in particular, but I was too young for the first, and I had my conversion in the grace of God by the time the fifth rolled around, and I was very aware of the horrific violence, murder that wars bring, and even more so, a religious war. This has been written about somewhat, and it is mostly true about my going to Egypt, visiting the Sultan there, wanting to convert him, and so forth. And it’s true I was willing to be a martyr for my beliefs, but I really went on a mission of peace, for he had overwhelmed the Christian army and could slaughter them. When we met, he saw in me true devotion to God, and I saw in Him true devotion to God. He was very much a Sufi, and so love superseded dogma, and we had many prayers and discussions, and I was quite enthralled by the beautiful devotional poems and writings. I had come with my friend Illuminatas, as he was called then, who could translate from Arabic for me the quatrains and other wisdom from the Sultans’ beliefs, theology, writings, and philosophy. I shared my own, and I brought with me in my soul the grace of God. As I was listening earlier to the dear sister who will meet with her pastor and had concerns, I too had concerns. Will the seeds of my love fall on rocks, fallow ground, or will I be martyred? And so first and foremost, I spoke with the love in my soul, and I sang with the Sultan and his men, and what transpired was not martyrdom but brotherhood, but the Sultan offering the Crusaders, the Christians, freedom if they laid down their arms, and they did.

This is love in the face of what you might perceive as an enemy. People who were willing to kill for their beliefs, people willing to die for them. But isn’t it better to live them? And as the song that was sung implores, “be the light, be the love”. You have already won the great victory of the soul when you pray, and you live in this love bestowed by God, and whatever you do carries the blessing.

So, when I returned to Assisi and my brothers, I took on actually the robe of the Sufi, “suf” meaning wool. We had just very simple wool garments, and we sang, and we prayed, and as you know, our little band was quite successful in bringing those who needed prayer, who needed food, who needed shelter, and above all, who needed the love of God, to us. This, of course, you know you can do in any moment in any situation, wherever you are, whoever you are presented with in a moment. All that is required is to first go to God, ask for guidance, ask for protection, and ask for the great gift of love. Carry this with you wherever you go, and you will not be disappointed, nor will those you come in contact with. I tell you this from my own experience. So, I now will step back in this beautiful circle, and I thank my brother for once again receiving my message. May the love of God be upon us and bless us and change us, forevermore. I am your brother in Christ.

I am Francis. Go in peace.
